Note: The deadline for nominating faculty for the 2006 award has passed.
The Outstanding Scholar Award is part of the University's Excellence Through Commitment Awards Program.
Purpose
In order to recognize and
promote outstanding research and creative endeavors, the Outstanding
Scholar Award was conceived in 1985. It is a testament to the
contribution of scholarship and artistic activity, which is essential
to the life of the University and the goals of Southern at 150:
Excellence Through Commitment.
Criteria for Selection
The Outstanding Scholar
Award is an exceptional one given only to those who have made
outstanding contributions to their discipline and have thus become
widely recognized for their achievements by other scholars in the
field. The award need not be made annually. The award should not be
granted to more than one individual during an academic year.
Nomination Process
Nominations for the award
may be made by colleagues, associates, supervisors, or subordinates of
the nominee. A detailed statement of the nature and importance of the
nominee's research/creative accomplishments should support the
nomination. Nominations are due by Monday, October 3, 2005.
Send them to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and
Graduate Dean, mailcode 4344, ATTN: Outstanding Scholar Award Committee.
A separate submission of
relevant supporting documentation, such as the nominee's curriculum
vitae (prepared in the standardized format used for promotion) and a
list of scholarly/creative activities and special awards, must be
forwarded to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research by Friday, October 28, 2005.
Presentations listed should be identified as invited, national, or
international. In addition, information should be provided that can be
used as ranking criteria for publications. In submitting supporting
documentation, each nominator must provide (after consultation with the
nominee) a list of six (6) referees external to the University.
No SIUC faculty should be included in the list of references for any
nominee. The list of referees should include name, address, phone
number, e-mail address (if available), and a short biographical sketch
(2-3 paragraphs) for each referee. The nominee's affiliation with each
referee should be identified.
Selection Process
The Outstanding Scholar
Award Committee is to be composed of an active scholar selected by the
Deans' Council, an active scholar selected by the Faculty Senate, and
an active scholar selected by the Graduate Council. Three additional
members shall be the Outstanding Scholars of the previous three years.
The seventh member, the chair, is to be appointed by the Provost and
Vice Chancellor. Should one of the eligible, previous Outstanding
Scholars not be able to serve, the Graduate Dean will select a like
awardee from previous years. This committee will draw up comprehensive
procedures and standards to regulate all areas of the selection
process. Amendments to the statements set forth in this document should
be proposed by the selection committee for consideration by the Provost
and Vice Chancellor.
Eligibility
All full-time SIUC faculty
and staff members who, at the time of the original nomination, are
involved in research or creative activities are eligible for the award.
Once nominated, the nominee may remain eligible for consideration for
two additional years, if still a member of the SIUC faculty or staff.
Renomination will require agreement on the part of the nominee, to be
obtained again by the nominator. The supporting documentation may be
updated at this time. This award is permanent recognition of
outstanding scholarship and is, therefore, awarded only once to an
individual.
Nature of Award
The permanent title of
Distinguished Scholar, a $7,500 award, a $7,500 account to be used to
support professional activities within the next fiscal year, an
assigned parking space for one year, an SIUC wristwatch, and a framed
certificate are to be granted the winner of the Outstanding Scholar
Award. The award is made solely in recognition of
creative/scholarly activities; the recipient is not required to render
future services to the University as a condition of receiving the award.
